This might help someone plan gaming sessions and heist crews some day, so I'll leave it here.

I just sent a ping to your location using your IP... Not bad for such a long distance... Average 244ms ping with 0 packet loss.

XL TV package, 230+ TV channels + 46 HD channels (usually £23 per month)

100MB fibre broadband (usually £33 per month).

Unlimited UK mobile and landline calls for an added £10 per month (£9.95 line rental on top of that).

Added Sky Sports and Sky Movies HD (usually £34 per month).

It's a 'mix and match' bundle, I have all of that for £79 per month, but I have been a customer for 4 years and I worked for Virgin Media for 2 years.

All of their net packages have been recently 'supercharged', so you get a lot more bang for your buck  ;).

I just received an email from Sky saying they were installing fibre in my area. Tried to check using postcode and landline and ended up in an error loop.

I can't see them digging up the historic cobbled streets of the old wharf area where I live anytime soon though to install cables.

They won't need to dig up roads, they run lines to and from the exchange boxes that are based in your local area.

Are you sure? I remember them putting the fibre networks in around my city and there was a lot of digging done. They left the city centre alone though due to extra costs and distruption. Flats on the other side of the river to me have been networked but it was never put in on my side. If the physical cables aren't there then not sure what they can do.

Oh yeah, if the area doesn't have any fibre coverage then it will involve digging to connect the fibre service from the exchanges to the cabinets, but that won't affect every residential street.

It's the network from the exchanges to the cabinets that needs to be replaced, some of it is still copper, this is what Sky may be doing in your area (the cabinet is the green electrical box likely to be located in your local area). Some ISP's still use copper cables from the green cabinets to the exchanges in a lot of areas and have no plans to upgrade, so it really is a WIP that's set to get better over time.

Wow HotWired.  That's even worse than mine.

Do you live at Wilson's Prom, Gippsland or somewhere remote?

If we ever played a 1 on 1 death-match, it'll probably be in slow-motion.  It'll be like the Matrix.

Actually nope haha, Langwarrin actually, I used to get about 6mb/s till they broke something on the exchange :( (had no internet for 2 months till quite recently)

Hahaha I reckon it would be LMAO!

Damn DC, you could supply the internet for most of the crew! I cant really imagine what you would need it that quick for though, unless you want to have about 10 people in your house all gaming together while downloading or streaming movies on other tvs :P

Im currently doing a few more tests for speed at different times of the day and will post the results here later.

I had a little look into the difference of the different types of connections and for adsl 2+ (old twisted pair copper phone wires which aren't meant for carrying large amounts of data and you need to be within 5km from the exchange, and even then you lose a significant amount of speed the further away you are) can get speeds of up to 25Mbps, but most get much less. So i was getting pretty good with it.

Cable internet (coaxial cabling, which can carry a lot more data then the old phone lines) can vary between 30 and 100Mpbs, so it is a lot better, but still suffers a lot of congestion.

Finally we are catching up with getting fibre optic. Unfortunately, we are doing half a job and only doing fibre to the node (FttN) which uses optic fibre to the node and then coaxial cable to the premises. I dont have it in my area but they are slowly rolling it out across Australia. They will only guarantee speeds of 25Mbps and up to 100Mbps which isnt too bad considering but we are still way behind the rest of the developed world..

Maybe one day we will get fibre to the premises (FttP) which will guarantee much higher speeds.

.

There's lots of devices connected at the same time... 2 PS4's, 2 PC's, 2 laptops, 1 mobile phone, 1 iPad, 1 smart TV, 1 Blu-ray player and 2 TiVo boxes.

I think that's all.

How do you play them all at once? :P

My speed results are me only using ps4 by itself. When the PC, phones and tablets connect that will be an entirely different story!

I wish I could, I'd need a lot of arms.

The vast majority of those are things that I don't use.

^^ Very similar to Australia's internet, Smurf.  You got better ping though.

2:00pm test.  Pretty much the same as other times of the day.

Faster than 51% of Australia.  Yessss!  In the top half.  Wooo Hooo.

Must only be some areas which are getting fibre only to the node? I know for sure that my area will have FttP.

oh really? Where abouts are you? I thought that it was the original plan but once the liberal government got in they made it only the the node. I vaguely remember that some premesis where already getting it so maybe only some get it.

The plan now is definitely only to the node to save money and spend it else where.

Yep, definitely! Langwarrin (Victoria) - Work had started in our area while Rudd was still PM, however - work was delayed once Abbott became PM.. Have seen the workers do a fair bit of work the past few months, so hoping to be on an NBN plan real soon.

Damn! You're lucky. I'm in Sydney and I recently looked at upgrading due to the bad congestion and currently there is no fibre optic available and I don't know when they will be installing it here. I'm pretty sure other parts of Sydney are getting it but yeah.

Ah yeah! I get really horrid internet here, so NBN is a blessing haha - Hopefully it becomes available for you, I know how much slow internet sucks lol!

yeah no_snacks, we're pretty much getting the same except for the ping results. A weeks ago I actually had my ISP Technician come out to check on my setup and by the technician testing the coax cable, he found that It was receiving Intermittent signal loss, the reading was (-13) which was terrible because the optimal signal strength would be (0) or as close to. He changed a two way splitter that was in a box  they had placed from my initially signing up to the side of the house, and now my signal is (+1). My PS3 download is consistently 28.2Mbps now.

Disclaimer this in no way improves my driving skills so sailors, pestrians & pilots beware or you will end up looking like this : GRIMACE : lol.

This is probably the first positive speed test I have ran with my isp. They are crap, but at this time and day, seems to be about proper lol.

I'm in and internet is connected, I did a speed test and I am very surprised and happy with the result

Wasn't expecting to actually get anywhere near that!

Is that from your new flat???
