That sucks.  Didn't have issues like that this afternoon.  Did you try restarting your router?  Sometimes that works if it's just you having connection issues.  However, it's a Friday night and that's a prime night for Rockstar servers to be junk.

I struggle a lot of time joining playlists or even joining sessions I've been invited to. I always feel bad because people keep inviting me.

I did try and buy a Wi-Fi extender but that made it worse.

For some reason when I'm in a public room I can't bring up my phone or even the pause menu.

I'm having the similar issues. So posting here to see in you managed to get them solved, and if so what did you do? Also posting a summary of what I have got back from RS support.

I was OK up to maybe 4 to 6 weeks ago, having played GTAonline for well over a year. There was always the occasional disconnection or failure to join a PL, but usually a 2nd attempt would be successful. But now it seems to be getting worse and worse. I think the last 4 PL I have tried to join 2 I got in but it took more than one attempt, the other 2 I could not get in no matter how many invites I tried to accept (and re-booting PS3 and or modem made no difference). Also these days if I try to join online to a open session (ie. not solo, not crew/friends only) it always fails at the 1st attempt, and often the 2nd or 3rd as well, but I will get in eventually (unless I give up and just go to a solo session, which I often end up doing).

I have contacted RS and got a reply earlier today with what looks like useful advice, but not had chance to check it all out yet.

Their explanation, and I've read this elsewhere as well, is to do with how your router / modem connects you to other people playing the game. I don't understand what all the technical stuff means, but what I do understand now is your router connects you in one of 3 ways  called "open", "moderate" and "strict".

I may be trying to over simplify things or have misunderstood  here, but I think it's like this;

If your router is open you should not have any problems joining other players.

Moderate can only connect to moderate and open.

Strict can only connect to open.

If you do have strict and successfully join, then a moderate player joins, you get disconnected.

But it gets more complicated.  Sometimes what type of connection you have is not detected properly to start with. So you could be unable to join even though you should be able to, but also you may join OK as it gets your connection class wrong, but later it does figure out the correct one and now you get disconnected because you shouldn't really have been able to connect in the first place. On top of this some ISPs have this open/moderate/strict classification as well, irrespective of what your own modem / router is.

All of this does not really help to solve the problem, just understand why it happens.

I'll post again later when I have done all the tests recommended on my PS3.

If you have an ethernet cable and are in range of your modem plug it in. Wired connection > wireless for all gaming.

If you go on your modem via a pc, by inputting your IP address in the web browser (you can find this in your internet connection settings on ps3) then it will bring up your modem settings.

Enable UPNP.

You can also "open ports" for specific games, but everytime I have tried this (since I was a teenager) I have f***ed it up lol

I used to play Gears of War a lot when I was younger, and had connection issues with that a lot. In the end, I put the modem into something called DMZ which was a good temporary fix, disables all security for a single device, i.e ps3.

I've done all that. RS support sent me a link to a port fowardarding website that went through which ports to open and how to do it. Seems to be much better now, but yet to try joining a PL half way through. About to put that to the test now.

I managed to join the PL last night. Slight problem at first, it would not select my main character, but I don't think that is related to connection issues as far as joining other players is concerned. So I think I am OK so far. But 1PL is not enough to test this. Only time will tell if my problems have definitely been solved.

Anyone else having problems like this follow Tikki's advice. It's the same as what RS support told me. If you don't know how to open up more ports on your router see http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

It goes through the process with very clear instructions. They also have a free program for testing if ports are open on your router already.

im constantly having issues, i think its the wifi that's exacerbating it so i ordered a 25m Ethernet cable to see if that helps. part of it is rockstars shitty servers as well :/

im having more trouble with PSN recently, randomly sgining me out and not letting me sign back in (throws up different error codes every time :/ ) happened in the pl last night which succckkkeeddd.

It is worth checking what ports are open on your router. Originally I was just blaming in on RS. But when I checked my router there were a lot of ports not open that RS and/or portforward.com recomend you do have open. Since I opened them up it has got better, but still not as good as it should be. e.g last night I could not get into Proto's 1st PL, kept getting the "player is no longer in session" error, but the 2nd one he ran I got in no problem.

Well thank heavens that I'm not the only one. I've been avoiding talking about it here (until Proto showed me this thread) coz I thought it was just me. I've had a support ticket open with rockstar for a couple weeks now. They suggested the port forwarding stuff but I assured them that the problem was on their side of things and am waiting for an update on the fix.

They tried telling me to watch the news wire, lol. Yeah nah. I insisted that they keep me up to date on any developments with a fix.

In my downtime, I've been hustling hell hard to try n save for a ps4 n new TV as I'd been playing with av cables n not hdmi, lol.

But yeah, I wonder why only some of us are affected and others ain't? I can't restart heists or missions after failing, and that's only IF I'm able to join any activity at all. Soooooo frustrating.
