Squirrel, while that is entirely possible, the EULA that is referred to in this instance is for Microsoft Services Agreement which only covers Microsoft owned services. Windows 10 does not check for other 3rd party software nor disables them if they are not licensed. They can and probably do check for unlicensed Xbox hardware and games, which are all owned by MS.

I've actually got a win 7 USB stick but it was the apparent statement by microsoft that said they also able to upgrade pirated software which intrigues me.

This is the information I've been trying to find out, some sites say I can upgrade others say no. The official line seems to be if you upgrade from a unlicensed copy of windows 7 then the upgraded version of windows 10 will also be unlicensed. What that actually means for being able to use the PC I don't actually know.

I had an "unofficial" copy of windows and upgraded to Windows 10 easy. I was a bit worried it would screw it up, but that would have been my excuse to get a new laptop, unfortunatley it worked haha

So is your once not so legal copy of windows now a fully fledged legal version?

I have started the upgrade process on my media server now, will see what its like later tonight.

It seems that way, I have a new serial key, and in my settings it says activated.

The fakes also say 'activated' and updates will be enabled.

A qualified computer geek that I know told me yesterday that in a lot of instances the fake will be detected and the system will revert to the previous version with updates disabled as the product is now flagged as fake.

A lot of serials have been used to the death and posted all over the internet, those will be detected much earlier. Keygens obviously work a lot better in that respect.

I've updated mine and it all seems fine, all my existing software on there works legal or not. I had a small issue with my keyboard to start with which made signing in the 1st time interesting but got that sorted with an updated driver and a reboot.

The only negative I can say is that it managed to find some pics of my ex. I thought I had deleted them all but windows 10 found them.

For the men amongst us in a relationship:

If you have a secret porn stash on your PC, make sure it's not in the Pictures or Videos folders. No matter how deep within those folders the files are hidden, windows 10 will find them and place them in an album!

I still haven't upgraded to 10, still using 7. Rose updated hers to windows 10 and we ended reverting it back to 8 because a program we had for use at the shop wouldn't run on 10.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I tolerate Windows 10 because my job means I have to be able to work with most operating systems. I still prefer the user interface of Windows 7 but 10 is a big improvement over Windows 8. I still end up dealing with some interesting bugs though.

For those of you stuck with 10 (or 8) who want the desktop to be like Windows 7 you could try a program called Classic Shell. It's free and puts the old style start menu back if you want it.

I tried windows 10 finally, had to revert back to 7 because 10 sucked up all the memory in my laptop rendering it unusable.

Not sure if anyone has tried this or not but there is the option to run programs (.exe) in compatibility mode. Using this you can choose any version of Windows back to Windows 95. I have had good success with this at work running some older versions of custom software and development tools for both Windows 7 and 10. To do this, right click on the actual .exe file for the program (not the shortcut) and click on the compatibility tab. From here you can choose the version of Windows that you want. This may not work for everything and can be a pain if you don't have a machine or the time to test.
