If it is an android phone I believe you can share your internet, create an access point for the ps to connect to, on iPhone I'm not sure but there may be an app to do that

It's an android. As you mention it I have used it as a hotspot for a laptop before (pain to configure). I will try and see if the ps4 can use it ok.

I am a bit skeptical as how well the connection would work. I figured if I use something else than the phone it might be more reliable.

This is how I do all my gaming. No phone means no playing online.

It does vary per game. If I play Destiny more in a week it is less than playing GTA for a week. Party chat also draws more data that game chat.
