I gotta lose about 20 lbs and just need to start getting in some slight better physical shape, I know I can go get some shoes to do dome jogging in but I'm not really a runner of any kind, so for a new pair of decent running shoes what do you use or recommend??

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I'm not sure what shops you have close to you but in most towns here in the UK there are specialist running shops where they have a treadmill set up with cameras and they can analyse your run and find the right shoe to suit your style, some people are heavier on one side, if your foot is rolling too much then they can recommend the right shoe to adjust your step. Hopefully they should have something similar near you.

The right shoes make a hell of a difference, I was doing a lot of road running wearing just a basic pair of trendy trainers, I ended up with all sorts of ankle problems from that. Once I got the right shoe though it made a big difference.

There's plenty of free apps as well so you can monitor your runs. Strava is a good one along with Nike Running, you don't need to go to the expense of buying a wrist monitor if you have a smart phone, just make sure you have a secure way of strapping it to your body while running. Having a record of what you're achieving makes it a competition against yourself every time you lace up your shoe.

I use Saucony Omni 12's at the moment, these were recommended by the shop to suit my run so couldn't say they would be the same for you as everybodys feet are different.

Personally I would prioritise muscle & strength building along with an appropriate dietary strategy along with reducing/ avoiding alcohol and no smoking. Forget measuring body weight, check body composition for signs of progress like your pants getting loose around your waist along with shirts getting tight around your shoulders and chest. If you have never lifted before and you are not carrying an huge ammount of body fat the scales can show an inrease of weight gain. This weight gain will be because of increased bone density, increased muscle mass and increased conective tisuue strength and some other stuff. After some progess in the muscle & strength departement has been *honestly* observed, then you could start to add in some short duration intense cardio conditioning. In regard to cardio for getting in shape John Meadows states, "There is no middle ground" this means choose to walk or sprint, no jogging! Caveats abound in situations like this AND if you need to be good at something you need to practice it, there are always exceptions.

If you do plan on doing a lot of running than the advice above is good. You can go to this site to find any shoe fitting stores in your area to get fitted and get some shoe recommendations. Proper fitting shoes do make a big difference if you are going to be running a bunch.
