Mystery Car November 2021
Mark Verstappen posted a topic in VANS Events & Results,
Come and join us for Mystery Car on Wednesday 17th of November at 20:00 GMT. We will start out in free roam on the soccer field of the track-and-field complex at the University of San Andreas, Los Santos location from where we will have to follow the clues to find the Mystery Car. Once the car is revealed we will all buy it if needed, modify it, then spend the night racing it.
The price of the car will be less than $100k so don't worry about having to spend millions to join in.
The usual rules will apply, don't bring the emergency services along with you in free roam, don't kill other players, race clean and respect the other racers.... Basically don't be a bellend.

Crew Challenge 248 – Braddock Pass
A two player team time trial in Compacts. As usual we'll do a semi-random draw of teams once we have enough participants signed up. Recent winning pairings will be excluded; Ally & Rammstein CC246, Me & Skorp CC 244, Con & Skorp CC242. Teammates must use different models of car.
But for a change this is not fastest lap, it's the best time for a 3 lap race.

Night of the Bogey Car!!!

Come and join us for some last minute planned Halloween fun this Wednesday...
This Halloween themed night will feature a new racing system called the Bogey Car!
We will all pick a different car on the grid, we will elect chose the worse car and elect this to be the bogey car, we will select a few other choices to be known as the 'popular cars'. Whoever won the last race and/or whoever is top of the Playlist will have to race in the bogey car.
To rid yourself of the Bogey Car curse all you need to do is not finish last in a race and you can go back to the popular selection again.

Rigged Random Car Extravaganza Pt6

Come and join us on Wednesday 20th of October at 8 PM British time for Part 6 of the Rigged Random Car Extravaganza! After doing the Rigged Random Tier Extravaganza recently I thought it was only fitting (and time) to see what wacky, fast, slow, stupid cars it would give us.
After a meet up in free roam east across the water from Bristols (The big t*ts looking buildings 💦) we will launch into a playlist of races where you will only know what car we will be racing each race when we get to the race lobby.
Each car is determined by a random generator with a few exclusions like not more than 3 cars from the same class, used recently in an event or often used cars in regular races (I.E. cars like the Krieger in Supers).
We will run GTA races so we can spawn in cars for those who do not have them.

Crew Challenge 245 – Golf
With Solheim Cup a couple of weeks ago and the Ryder Cup next weekend (those are the USA vs Europe bi-annual gold tournaments) I thought it was time we had another gold challenge.
A solo challenge, 9 holes of golf. But just to be a bit different do holes 1 to 6 in bright weather and holes 7 to 9 in the rain. So you will have to do them in two separate games (you can set the start and end hold and weather on the Settings screen). Make as many attempts at each set of holes as you like. Best score for all 9 holes wins. Please save and submit screen shots for each game.
As a tie break we'll use the distance your tee shot makes on hole 1, closest to the pin wins. The easiest way to see this is from your 2nd shot. It will show 'To Pin' and other info on the screen before you take the shot. So save a screen shot for that as well. It does not have to be from the same round you submit your scores for holes 1 to 6 from. You can even re-do that on it's own if you like.

La Strada [RSC Film Club 34]

This month we are going international as the film club watches a movie in a language that we've not yet covered, as suggested by @djw180. So no films in English, French, Norwegian, Korean or Japanese could be nominated. The winning film, nominated by me, is Federico Fellini's neorealist drama, La Strada (The Road).
It stars Giulietta Masina as Gelsomina, a naive and simple young woman whose mother sells her to a travelling circus to be the wife and assistant of the brutish strongman, Zampanò (Anthony Quinn). She soon falls in love with the circus's clown, Il Matteo (Richard Baseheart) and considers leaving her jeasous and violent husband for him.
I'm really looking forward to watching this as I'm both a fan of Fellini, and of Masina. Their other collaboration that I've seen, Nights of Cabiria in which Masina plays a down on her luck prostitute, is one of my favourite films ever and her performance one of the best I've ever seen. Masina was his muse and his inspiration, and you can feel the love he has for her in the way he films her. The two were married from 1943 until his death in 1993.
This is considered one of Fellini's greatest masterpieces, so if you've never seen a film of his before you are in for a treat.

Crew Challenge 249 – Double Entendre Photo Contest
This a photo contest suggested by @Beez based on one he has run before. Take a photo in game (GTA) of something with a double meaning. The hidden meaning is usually s*xual or violent and always funny. There's lots of advertisements and logos like this. The logos look normal until you give them a second look.
To start with we'll say you can submit as many entries as you want. The winners will be decided from a poll. If there are too many to go in one poll I may ask you to pick your best 3 or something like that.
Post your photos here as we go along so that someone else doesn't duplicate your entry. We have done this before a few years ago, so if you took part then try to find something new (if you can remember what your entries were last time). Photos can be taken any way you like, screenshots or snapmatics.
Please try to have all your photos posted before this ends so we can get the poll started ASAP.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror [RSC Film Club 35]

It's spooky season and that can only mean one thing here at the film club, time for horror. Just like last year we are having a double bill with a classic and a modern horror film. For our classic selection we have F.W Murnau's legendary German expressionist vampire film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.
Starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok the film is an unauthorised retelling of Bram Stoker's Dracula, the names all changed to avoid lawsuits, but other than that it is a pretty faithful version of the story. It was so faithful that the estate of Bram Stoker sued the production company and won, putting the company out of business and having a judge rule that all copies of the film be burned. Luckily for us one print survived and made its way around the world, becoming one of the first "cult films".
There is also an interesting mythology behind the film, the most famous myth being that Schreck was not an actor but an actual vampire, so shocking his appearance and creepy his performance. This idea is brilliantly explored in the film Shadow of the Vampire (2000) which stars John Malkovich as Murnau and Willem Dafoe as Orlok.
This is also, by a long shot, the oldest film we've covered here, and our first silent film. I haven't seen this since my college film studies classes and can't wait to revisit one of the most iconic horror films of all time, and hear what you guys think.
The whole film is available to watch on YouTube. There is a blu-ray remaster on there, but I prefer this original version with the differently coloured tints.

The Shining [RSC Film Club 36]

The modern half of our horror double bill was nominated by @PretendWereDeadand is Stanley Kubrick's haunted house masterpiece, The Shining.
The film stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as Jack and Wendy Torrance, a couple charged with looking after the isolated Overlook hotel during the winter months. Along with their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) the soon discover that they may not be alone. I don't think I have to say much more about this film here, it's so legendary that even the carpet is iconic.
It is interesting to note that Stephen King, author of the book on which this is based, hated this film so much that he made his own TV miniseries version in the late 90s. However, he is in a very small minority with that opinion. There is also a documentary about the legions of conspiracy theories about this film called Room 237 (I wasn't a fan, but some of the theories are interesting). There is also a sequel, Doctor Sleep, released only a couple of years ago, starring Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny and is is much better than it has any right to be.

Come and join us on Wednesday 3rd of October at 20:00 UK Time for ABC! Just turn up to the parking lot of the Church in Strawberry in any of the 8 ABC 1 cars.
We will determine who knows their ABC best before we start a playlist to determine who gets an A+!
For all races we will all race one car of the ABC per race from 1 to Z starting with 1 to E this Wednesday. ABC will be hosted sporadically. We wont do all of the nights in succession.

Race points will go out the window as the only thing we will keep track of is the money...
Every race will see every racer bet on the outcome, make sure you bring a pencils and some paper to keep track of your gains and losses as the player with the highest cash sum at the end of the night wins, so its go big or go home.
Bet as little or as much as you like on each race (every missed bet will cost you cash and grid positioning).
You cannot bet on yourself to win.
The races will be locked to one car (sorry all my jobs to make things easy) so we don't waste tie picking cars, we can just bet!

Rigged Random Tier Extravaganza

Come and join us on Wednesday 22nd August at 20:00 UK Time for the Rigged Random Tier Extravaganza. After a meet up behind 'Bishop's WTF?!' we will launch into a playlist of races where you will only know what class and tier of car you can choose before each race when we get to the race lobbies.
A tier is a group of cars in a class all about on the same pace. For example in SUV's one of these is the Granger, Landstalker XL, Rocoto, Seminole Frontier, Serrano, Squaddie & XLS. This should give us a diverse grid of cars maybe not often used while still competitive among eachother.
Each tier is determined by a random generator with a few exclusions like skipping tiers with only one car, already used earlier on the evening or tiers often used in regular races (I.E. with cars like the Krieger in Supers). Also we will not be doing the same class twice in a row.
We will run GTA races so we can spawn in cars for those who do not have any from the tier.
